I went to Los Angeles for the first time about four or five years ago. When I arrived at the airport, I realized that I was going to need a rental car to get around in during my trip. I don’t know why it hadn’t crossed my mind, but for one reason or another, I simply had not realized ahead of time that I was going to need a rental car during my trip.

I went to one of the rental car companies that was located at the Los Angeles airport, and after waiting in line for what seemed like forever, I was unpleasantly surprised at how much my rental car cost me.

After my trip, I realized the reason they were able to charge so much is because they knew I needed a rental car, so they weren’t going to give me any discounts. I realized that if I wanted to save any money, I was going to need to make my reservation ahead of time.

Fast forward to last month, and I took another trip to Los Angeles. This time around, I didn’t pay much at all for my airport car rental in Los Angeles because I used the Internet to make my reservation ahead of time.

I don’t really know anyone who enjoys spending time in airports. Although I know a countless amount of people who are passionate about traveling, I can’t think of a single one of those people who likes spending more time than required in airports. Even though there is obviously no way to completely avoid airports if you are going to be flying somewhere, there are ways to minimize the amount of time that you have to spend in airports.

When I traveled to Los Angeles last summer, I learned a valuable lesson about how to minimize the amount of time that I needed to spend in the Los Angeles airport. Because I was going to be in Los Angeles for over a week, I knew that I was going to need a rental car for transportation. Instead of waiting until I arrived, I made my rental car reservation online. Because I took care of this ahead of time, I was able to quickly get my rental car from the Los Angeles airport, instead of standing in line like all of the people who hadn’t made a reservation ahead of time.

Next week, I am going to be taking a trip to Los Angeles. Although the flight to Los Angeles and back from this city is going to be quite long for me (since I live on the East Coast of the United States), I am actually only going to be in Los Angeles for two and a half days.

If you are wondering why I would fly such a long distance to only stay for a couple of days, the reason is because this trip is not for my personal enjoyment. Instead, I am taking this trip as a part of my job. We are in the middle of discussions with another company about a possible merger between the two of our companies, and as a part of my professional responsibilities, I will be spending my time in Los Angeles going over some specific details with the other company.

You may think that it’s going to be stressful to hold multiple meetings over the course of just two and a half days, but because I made sure to reserve a rental car at the Los Angeles airport for myself, I don’t anticipate encountering any problems.

I’m not using the title of this post to be arrogant. The reason that I wrote that I’m a smart traveler is because I want to help others make their travels go as smoothly as possible. All of the things that I now know were learned the hard way, so if I could spread this knowledge to others, it would make me feel good knowing that they will be able to avoid all of the hassles that I had to endure in order to learn what I know now.

For me, the most important part of being a smart traveler is knowing how to save money. If you are able to save money every time that you go on a trip somewhere, you will be able to take more trips in total (because of the money that you will have saved).

From all of my experience, the best thing you can do to save money is make your arrangements ahead of time. For example, I took a trip to Los Angeles last month, and because I used the Internet to make my reservation three weeks before my trip began, I was able to pickup a cheap car rental at the airport when I arrived in Los Angeles.
