Maybe it’s just habit, but most people automatically rent a car at the airport they fly into. But if you define success as paying the least amount for the same or better service, it may be time to rethink your car rental habits.

If you’re flying into Los Angeles International Airport, Hertz will rent a Chevrolet Aveo for $309.18 after taxes and fees if you “pay now.”

If you stay at the downtown Marriott at 333 South Figueroa Street, Hertz rents the same car for $228.14 per week after taxes and fees – a savings of $81.04.

That leaves the question of how to get from the airport to the hotel. The answer: take the metro! All-day passes cost just $5.

You might think that another way to save money when renting a car in Los Angeles is to fly into any airport other than Los Angeles International Airport.

Not so. Fly into the Hollywood Burbank airport, rent Hertz’s most inexpensive vehicle, the Chevy Aveo, and you’ll pay $423.39 after taxes and fees if you “pay now.” That’s $114.21 more than flying into LAX.

At $422.30, the Aveo is still more expensive at Orange County’s John Wayne Airport than it is at LAX – an extra $113.12.

Don’t forget to bring a valid drivers license. In California, you’ll need to be at least 21 to rent a car, and you’ll face extra charges if you’re under 25. By law, you’re allowed to add an extra driver to your rental agreement at no extra charge, but if that driver is under 25, you’ll pay a bit more.
